Vi er glade for å presentere Eline Mugaas’ 10. utstilling i Galleri Riis, siden den første i 2002.

Eline Mugaas jobber med samlinger. Med å samle egne og andres bilder, eller utsnitt av bilder i bilder, av armene som bærer, av boksen som lukker seg om tingene, hender som favner. En roterende bevegelse står sentralt i denne utstillingen, som i hovedsak består av Mugaas’ prosjekt til Lorck Schive Kunstpris i Trondheim Kunstmuseum, som hun mottok i fjor. I en film fra Brancusis atelier, danser en kvinne på en lav sokkel. Hun vrir kroppen i det hun fører armen over hodet. Bevegelsen minnet Mugaas om elementer fra kunsthistorien, fra karyatidene, søyler formet som kvinnekropper som bærer templer på sitt hode, eller gråtekoner fra antikke krukker som løfter armene over hodet og drar seg i håret i sorg, til de vridde kvinnekroppene i Matisses malerier. Men også bevegelsen når man svinger et objekt opp på hodet for å bruke kroppens vertikale akse til å bære tyngden, eller bevegelsen i det man løfter et barn opp på armen.

Mugaas har laget en installasjon bestående av skulptur, video og postkort, elementer som kan fungere som leddsetninger i en større helhet. Elementer en kan følge, ved at en ser noe vandre fra en konstellasjon til en annen. Slik som pappeskene fra forlaget Primary Information med boken Siri Aurdal by Eline Mugaas, et prosjekt der Mugaas hadde rollen som støttestruktur for en annen kunstner som manglet det nødvendige reisverket for å fortsette og være synlig.
Skulpturene er støttestrukturer i seg selv; bokhyller, pidestaller. Prosessen med å lage skulpturene får de underliggende pappeskene til å svikte og sige sammen, før pappmasje, lim og sement tørker og gjør dem harde og sterkere. Hyllene er sunket sammen, de har gitt etter for sin egen vekt, men er samtidig sterke nok til å bære. Bokhyller er støttestrukturer for innhold. Mugaas’ bokhyller er tilsynelatende tomme.
I galleriets anneks vil Mugaas vise en konstellasjon bestående av en foto-mural og nye bilder.

Eline Mugaas (f. 1969 i Oslo) har sin kunstutdannelse fra The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art i New York, og er en ledende kunstner i sin generasjon innen kamerabasert kunst. Hun arbeider også med film, skulptur, installasjon og bøker, og har både som kunstner og kurator vært med å løfte og prege den norske samtidskunstscenen. I 2019 mottok hun Lorck Schives Kunstpris, den største i Skandinavia. Mugaas bor og arbeider i Oslo.

Nødvendigheten av leddsetninger

We are pleased to present the exhibition Nødvendigheten av leddsetninger (The Necessity of Dependent Clauses) by Eline Mugaas, her 10th with the gallery since 2002.

Eline Mugaas collects. She collects her own and others’ pictures, or snippets of pictures in pictures, of the arms that carry, of the box that closes around things, the hands that embrace. A rotating gesture is central in this exhibition which includes the installation she made for the Lorck Schive Art Prize at the Trondheim Art Museum in 2019. In a film from Brancusi’s studio, a woman dances on a low pedestal, twisting her body as she moves her arm over her head. The gesture reminded Mugaas of elements from art history, from the Caryatids, pillars shaped like women’s bodies carrying temples on their heads, or mourners from ancient jars that raise their arms over their heads to tear at their hair as an expression of grief, to the twisted female bodies in Matisse’s paintings. It also made her think of the movement when swinging an object up to your head in order to use the body’s vertical axis to carry the weight, or when lifting a child.

Mugaas has created an installation consisting of sculpture, video and postcards, elements that can act as subordinates in a larger whole; that can be followed from one constellation to another. Like the cardboard boxes that came from the publisher Primary Information with the book Siri Aurdal by Eline Mugaas, a project in which Mugaas took the role of support structure for another artist who lacked the framework that was needed to continue to be visible as an artist. The sculptures are support structures in themselves; bookshelves, pedestals. The process of making the sculptures has caused the underlying cardboard boxes to sag and yield, before the papier-mâché, glue and spackling paste made them harder and stronger. The shelves bulge, giving in to their own weight, but are at the same time strong enough to carry weight. Bookshelves are support structures for content. Mugaas’ bookshelves are empty.

In the gallery’s Annex space, Mugaas presents a constellation of new images and a photo mural.

Eline Mugaas (f. 1969 in Oslo) received her artistic education from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City and is one of the leading artists of her generation in Scandinavia, working with camera-based art. She also works with film, sculpture and installation, and has both as a visual artist and curator made a significant impact on the contemporary art scene in Norway. In 2019 she was the recipient of the largest art prize in Scandinavia, the Lorck Schives Art Prize. Mugaas lives and works in Oslo.
