Galleri Riis Stockholm is proud to present Eline Mugaas’ first solo exhibition in Stockholm and Sweden.

Eline Mugaas (b. 1969) has titled the exhibition Another Room, a variation on the show I Make Another Room that she presented at Galleri Riis Oslo in the spring 2014.

The phrase “I make another room” is borrowed from a poem by Aram Saroyan and in Mugaas’ interpretation these words point to the experience of moving from one room into another. Mugaas does not refer to a single distinct event, but rather a continuous motion, as does her photographs. They continue beyond their physical surface and take hold of the next image, which will grab on to the next and further seize the room as a whole.

Mugaas uses the camera to explore the relationship between formal compositions and chance ditto, how shapes and lines are repeated in seemingly disparate subjects. Different groups of images comes to light in the exhibition: one characterized by sun, light and heat, another by darkness and contrast, a third by the colour pink. For example, private photos are mixed up with more generic photographs from various urban spaces.

Through all the images there is an almost sculptural approach where the artist has her gaze fixed on space and volume, lines and abstraction, and how these elements behave in various conditions of light. In this way, a “new room” not only refers to when the artist directs the camera towards a new subject, or when viewers move between the images, but also to the temporary temporal and subjective rooms that can appear after each other in the same physical location.

Eline Mugaas (b. Oslo 1969) received her artistic education from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, and is considered one of the leading Norwegian artists practicing within the photographic medium. She also works with film and collage and curating, receiving praise for Hold stenhårdt fast på greia di, an exhibition of activist and feminist art she co-curated with Elise Storsveen for Kunsthall Oslo in 2013. With Storsveen she has since 2008 published the fanzine ALBUM#, and this year it was released as a book. The launch took place at the NY Art Book Fair in September. Mugaas lives and works in Oslo and New York City.

Eline Mugaas (f. 1969) har gett sin utställning titeln Another Room och bygger vidare på en utställning hon gjorde på Galleri Riis Oslo våren 2014, då med titeln I Make Another Room.

Frasen “I make another room” är tagen från en dikt av Aram Saroyan som i Mugaas tolkning sätter ord på upplevelsen av att förflytta sig från ett rum in till ett annat. Mugaas syftar inte till en enskilt avgränsad händelse, utan till en ständigt pågående rörelse. Så fungerar också hennes fotografier. De fortsätter utanför sin fysiska yta för att ta tag i nästa bild, som tar tag i nästa för att sedan ta tag i rummet som helhet.

Eline Mugaas använder kameran för att undersöka relationen mellan formella kompositioner och slumpens dito, hur former och linjer upprepas i tillsynes disparata motiv. I utställningen framträder olika grupper av bilder: en som karakteriseras av sol, ljus och värme, en annan av mörker och kontraster, en tredje av färgen rosa. Privata bilder blandas med mer generiska fotografier från till exempel olika stadsrum.

Genom alla bilder löper ett närmast skulpturalt förhållningssätt där konstnären har sin blick fäst på rymd och volymer, linjer och abstraktion och hur dessa element uppträder i specifika ljusförhållanden. På så sätt kan ett “nytt rum” inte bara referera till när konstnären riktar kameran mot ett nytt motiv eller när vi som betraktare förflyttar oss mellan bilder, utan också de tillfälligt tidsliga och subjektiva rum som kan följa efter varandra på samma fysiska plats.

Eline Mugaas (f. Oslo 1969) utbildade sig vid The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art i New York och anses vara en av de ledande norska konstnärerna inom det fotografiska mediet. Hon arbetar också med film och collage och som curator, bland annat med den hyllade Hold stenhårdt fast på greia di, en utställning med aktivistisk och feministisk konst som hon gjorde i samarbete med Elise Storsveen för Kunsthall Oslo 2013. Tillsammans med Storsveen har hon sedan 2008 publicerat fanzinet ALBUM# som 2014 gavs ut i bokform. Mugaas lever och arbetar i Oslo och New York.
